The Farm Auction

The farm auction is one of the oldest traditions in farm country, and it's still happening here. Walk past an estate sale sign on a county road in October and you might find three hundred people standing in a pasture bidding on a 1970s tractor, a set of cultivators, a barn full of hand tools, and the furniture from a farmhouse that's been in the same family since 1902.

Farm auctions are economic events. They're also social ones. The crowd at a farm auction includes neighbors who knew the family for forty years, dealers who've driven in from Indiana, collectors looking for specific equipment, and young farmers trying to build out an operation without paying new prices for old iron. The auctioneer works fast, calling numbers in a rhythm that sounds almost musical.

When an older farm family sells out — the last generation deciding not to pass the operation on — the auction is often the public closing of a chapter. The neighbors who show up aren't all there just to buy. Some of them are there because they remember when the barn was built, when the kids were in 4-H, when the farmer's wife won the pie contest at the county fair in 1978. They're there to witness the end of something.

The county's land records go back generations of farmland changing hands. The auctions are where many of those transfers become real. It's agricultural capitalism in its oldest form, and it's still very much alive on a Tuesday morning in October.

🏫 School Alerts

  • St. Anne — No School (Catechetical Day)
  • Bradley SD 61 — No School (Fall Break)

Fall does not rush. It does what it does at its own pace -- the leaves, the air, the long evenings turning shorter. October 5th is as good a Monday as any to take that lesson to heart.
