Editor's Note
Monday, September 28th. Last Monday of September. The week ahead is the bridge between fall-that-just-started and October-that-means-business. Farmers are watching the forecast, the kids are in the groove at school, and you've got three days left to do whatever you said you'd do before October. No pressure.

📜 Dale's Corner
The Swedish Settlers
|
Among the lesser-told immigration stories in Kankakee County is the arrival of Swedish settlers in the mid-to-late 19th century. Swedish immigrants came to Illinois in large numbers during this period, concentrated heavily in the Chicago area and in rural communities along the railroads. Swedish farming families settled in several communities in Kankakee County, drawn by available agricultural land and conditions that weren't entirely unlike parts of southern Sweden. They brought with them a Lutheran tradition, a cooperative approach to community organization, and an agricultural practice that emphasized careful land stewardship. The Swedish community in the county was never as large or concentrated as the French-Canadian or German communities, but it left its marks β in family names, in church affiliations, in the organizational character of some rural communities. Three or four generations of intermarriage and cultural blending have made these distinctions harder to trace, but the roots are there for anyone who looks.
