Monday, September 21, 2026  πŸŒ§ 63Β°/56Β° β€” Slight Chance Rain Showers

Editor's Note

Monday, September 21st. The fall equinox hits tomorrow, which means today is technically the last full day of summer -- though K3 might argue the corn harvest already told us the season changed. Hispanic Heritage Month is rolling through week three, football schedules are stacking up, and if you woke up to a cool morning, Dale says that's the county's way of telling you to go outside. Good week to be in the Bourbs.

The First Frost

The first frost of the season in Kankakee County usually arrives somewhere between late September and mid-October, depending on the year. It announces itself the night before: the temperature drops fast after sunset, the air goes dry, the sky clears completely. If you're paying attention, you know what's coming.

The morning after the first frost is one of the more striking mornings of the county year. The low areas β€” the frost pockets in the fields, the ditches along the road, the low spots on the river road β€” are white. The tender garden plants that made it through the summer are blackened. The squash and pumpkins curing in the garden are fine.

For gardeners, first frost means final harvest β€” whatever is still on the vine comes in or it doesn't. For farmers mid-harvest, it's mostly irrelevant; the crops are dry enough by then that frost doesn't affect them significantly. For everyone else, it's the moment the season closes for good. The evidence is on the windshield when you go to start the car in the morning.

The best Monday is the one where you already know what you're doing by 8am.
