Editor's Note
Good Monday morning, Kankakee County. Dale here. August 31st. Last day of the month. Summer isn't officially over until tomorrow, but August has had its say — the fair, the Food Truck Festival, the first week of school, a Manteno board meeting or two. Not bad for one month. This week is a short one before Labor Day. The county will ease into it. So go ahead and ease with it.

📅 Out & About in Kankakee County

Monday's calendar is thin after a jam-packed August: a scattered mix of library programs, two prep sports matchups, and Momence's monthly Lego Night for the kids. Nothing headline-grabbing, but plenty of small stuff to fill an evening.

📜 Dale's Corner
Last Day of August
The last day of August in Kankakee County. School has been back for a week or two at most places. The football season has started. The fields are that particular shade of late-summer gold at the corn tops, still green in the soybeans. The days are still warm — August in Illinois doesn't give up quietly — but there's something in the quality of the evening that isn't July anymore. The fireflies are gone. The nights are cooling faster. The shadow your house throws on the lawn at 6pm is longer than it was six weeks ago, and you notice it whether you mean to or not. September is a good month in this county. The summer heat breaks. The harvest starts. The fall sports are in full swing. The county fair is behind us, and people go back to being themselves without the extra events on the calendar. It's a month worth looking forward to.
