🏛 This Week in Local Government
Manteno's political rift between Mayor LaMore and the trustee majority reached new heights at the June 15 Village Board meeting, with trustees attempting to override two of the mayor's vetoes on the same evening — the Remote Attendance ordinance and a $9,350 tree replacement. Confirmed from June 1 minutes: the mayor had already vetoed both items at that prior meeting and publicly announced she would not execute contracts with the village administrator, police chief, or public works director despite board approval. Bourbonnais introduced a moratorium on data centers (first reading) and kicked off its FY2027 budget process at the June 15 meeting. Kankakee City's council considered a $150,000 comprehensive city plan agreement with Teska Associates. Bradley's village board meets Monday evening, June 22, with a tabled zoning case from June 8 back on the docket alongside a property purchase resolution.

📜 Dale's Corner
The Industrial East Side of Bradley
|
Most people know Bradley as the town built by the David Bradley Manufacturing Company — the farm implement and garden equipment maker that gave the town its name and its economic foundation from 1895 onward. But the Bradley that developed through the 20th century had multiple industrial identities. The east side of Bradley along the railroad corridor became a zone of warehousing, fuel storage, light manufacturing, and rail-served industry that served a wide area of northeastern Illinois. Tank farms, lumber yards, coal yards, and later petroleum distribution facilities occupied land along the tracks that was cheap, flat, and accessible to both rail and road. This industrial geography shaped land use on that side of town for decades — it's part of why residential development pushed primarily west and north rather than east. The factories, tanks, and warehouses are easy to overlook from Route 45, but they're a real part of what Bradley has always been.

Wildcats Baseball Survives in Extra-Inning Walk-Off Win
Momence baseball needed just one hit from Gabe Fitzgerald — and he delivered it when it mattered most. His seventh-inning walk-off single gave the Wildcats a 6-5 win over St. Anne/Donovan in late April, snapping a six-game losing skid and breathing fresh life into the River Valley Conference season.
